N64 save converter

Move N64 saves between RetroArch and Project64.

RetroArch's N64 cores put a game's EEPROM, SRAM, FlashRAM, and four controller paks into one .srm. Project64 and Mupen64Plus keep each in its own file. Split one into the other, or combine them back.

What the converter does

A Mupen64Plus-Next or ParaLLEl N64 .srm is 296,960 bytes: 2 KB of EEPROM, four 32 KB controller paks, 32 KB of SRAM, and 128 KB of FlashRAM, in that order. A game uses one of the cartridge types, sometimes with a pak.

Splitting writes only the parts the game used: .eep, .sra, .fla, and _Cont_1.mpk to _Cont_4.mpk for paks with saves on them. Combining takes any of those files (or Mupen64Plus's single .mpk with all four paks) and builds the .srm.

No byte swapping is needed: Project64, Mupen64Plus, and RetroArch's cores store each part the same way. Flash carts such as the EverDrive store SRAM and FlashRAM in the opposite word order; this tool doesn't convert for them.

Name the files for the emulator

  • RetroArch: the .srm takes the ROM's file name, in the saves folder (in a Mupen64Plus-Next folder if you sort saves by core).
  • Project64: the files take the game's Good Name, as Project64's ROM browser shows it, in its Save folder.

Keep your saves in sync instead

Converting is a one-off. If you play the same games on more than one device, SaveSync keeps the saves in step between them through RetroArch's built-in Cloud Sync, and keeps the 20 newest versions of each.

Set up RetroArch Cloud Sync in a few minutes.

Questions

Do Project64 saves need byte swapping for RetroArch?
No. Project64, Mupen64Plus, and RetroArch's N64 cores store EEPROM, SRAM, FlashRAM, and paks in the same byte order. Only flash carts use a different order for SRAM and FlashRAM.
Which file does my game use?
It depends on the cartridge: EEPROM (.eep) for games like Mario Kart 64 and Super Mario 64, SRAM (.sra) for Ocarina of Time, FlashRAM (.fla) for Majora's Mask and Paper Mario, and controller paks (.mpk) for games that save to a pak. Splitting writes only the ones with data.
Are my saves uploaded?
No. The converter runs in your browser, and your files never leave your device.
