SaveSync vs RomM
RomM is an excellent self-hosted ROM library, and since 5.4 it can be a server for RetroArch's Cloud Sync. If you only want your saves to follow you, SaveSync does the same job with nothing to run.
| SaveSync | RomM | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $2 a month or $15 a year, or included with Fastwater | Free and open source; you pay for the server |
| What you run | Nothing | RomM in Docker, its database, and HTTPS for devices away from home |
| RetroArch Cloud Sync | Yes, from RomM 5.4 | |
| Version history | The 20 newest versions of every save, with restore | Up to 50 versions per save slot |
| Standalone emulators | With the SaveSync app (coming) | With Argosy (Android) and Grout (Linux handhelds) |

RomM runs in Docker with a database. For a handheld to sync away from home, the server needs a public address with HTTPS, or a VPN like Tailscale on every device. When the server is off or its certificate expires, syncing stops; when its disk fails, so do your saves, unless you back it up.
In RetroArch's Cloud Sync settings, change the URL from your RomM server to SaveSync's, with a SaveSync key as the password, on the device with your newest saves first. RetroArch uploads its saves on the next start. Then change your other devices.
Setting up takes a few minutes per device: see the Cloud Sync guide, or the one for your device.
